“Do you want to be a joke? Can you not see how these jeans overemphasize your fat legs?”

Such taunts were not rare. When my mum was not satisfied with my outfits, she put aside her scruples, using vicious words to destroy my choices. As a teenager, I hated her for being so rigid and often irritated her deliberately.

However, at university, where I had to travel half way across China to go home, I threw away the hatred filter with which I’d stigmatized her tough love for years. I’d changed my attitude and mum suddenly began to let me make my own decisions while supporting me financially.

Her way of expressing herself was as degrading as usual, though.

 “You look ugly” turned into “You have to face the consequences if you make yourself look ugly.”

Human felicity is accumulated not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little gains that occur every day. No matter how hard the life is, it always needs us to move forward ourselves in this long life road. Do not fear that life shall come to an end, but fear that it shall never have a beginning. How can we take the first step when life is bombarded with great questions and challenges?

For me, I can't even take “the first step” until I was unfortunately trapped in a ledge when hiking with several fellows as a child. I can still clearly remember it was a sunny day, and there were two downhill roads. Out of curiosity, I chose to explore a hidden one. Unfortunately. I was struck in the rocks, and once I looked down, I saw that my legs, pressed hard against the walls, were shaking violently. My arms were scraped and bleeding, stretched out against the walls with all the pressure that I could exert. It was getting dark and I was waiting to be summoned by death when a familiar voice came into ears.

Thanks

——Guozhen Wang

How should I thank you

When I walk towards you

to just feel a wisp of spring breeze

you bathe me in the whole spring;

How should I thank you

When I walk towards you

to just hold a bunch of sea pray

you offer me a whole ocean;

HONORABLE MENTION - Yueran Tang.png

I was marooned in this room. Outside, the bleak winter twilight hovered along the skyline, impatient to envelop the city. Half dreaming, I heard you tapping at the window pane and helped you in. You came from a distant land, the astringent scent of plants there lingering in your locks.

You played a tune on your guitar and sang along, voice clear and gentle, elfin face radiant, melody and rhythm prompting me to dance.

Our meeting recalled my teens, an islet tender but tenacious against the mighty torrent of time, me the sojourner reluctant to set sail. Basking in love and expectation of those who understood me, I was grateful. My inner gratitude woke together with me every dawn, pervading to reach the boundary of my senses, tinging everything for the unfolding day.

Life out of the islet confounded me, like the spreading shadow here. Your guitar aside, you rested my head on your lap, gazing at the scattered books resembling stranded sailing boats as wind funneling through the window flipped through them.
